💡 The Big Idea
TOGAF is a framework and method for developing Enterprise Architecture (EA) — not a prescription, not a software, not a design pattern.
TOGAF stands for The Open Group Architecture Framework. It is owned and maintained by The Open Group — a global consortium of 700+ member organizations. Currently in its 10th Edition, TOGAF is used by 80%+ of Fortune 500 companies as their EA framework.
- ▸Provides a common vocabulary for EA
- ▸Defines a method for developing architecture: the ADM (Architecture Development Method)
- ▸Includes reference models: TRM (Technical Reference Model) and III-RM (Integrated Information Infrastructure Reference Model)
- ▸Provides tools, techniques, and governance guidelines
- ▸✅ FREE to use within any enterprise — Open Group membership is NOT required to apply TOGAF
- ▸📄 The TOGAF Standard (10th Edition) = the TOGAF Fundamental Content (six free-standing documents) + a collection of TOGAF Series Guides that give practical guidance for specific needs
TOGAF uses the ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010 definition:
"The fundamental concepts or properties of a system in its environment embodied in its elements, relationships, and in the principles of its design and evolution."
- ▸Architecture is about STRUCTURE + RELATIONSHIPS + PRINCIPLES
- ▸It answers: What exists? How do things relate? What rules govern changes?
In TOGAF, "Enterprise" does NOT mean "big company." It means:
"Any collection of organizations that have a common set of goals."
- ▸Could be a single department, a full organization, or a group of organizations
- ▸Could be government, private, NGO, startup — any entity pursuing shared objectives
- ▸Example: Digital University Kerala as a whole IS an enterprise; so is just the CDIPD department
TOGAF covers four interconnected domains — always in this order. Click each domain below to explore it:

The TOGAF Standard is not just the ADM — it has six interconnected components. The ADM is the core; the rest support and extend it:
- ▸⚙️ Architecture Development Method (ADM) — The CORE. An iterative process built from the Preliminary Phase and Phases A–H, with Requirements Management at the centre, for developing EA
- ▸📋 ADM Guidelines & Techniques — Supporting techniques: gap analysis, stakeholder management, risk management, business scenarios
- ▸🗂️ Architecture Content Framework — Defines what to produce: deliverables, artifacts, and building blocks (ABBs & SBBs)
- ▸🔄 Enterprise Continuum & Tools — Classifies architecture assets from generic (Foundation) to org-specific; includes the Architecture Repository
- ▸📚 Reference Library — Pre-defined reference architectures: TRM (Technical Reference Model) and III-RM (Integrated Information Infrastructure)
- ▸🏛️ Architecture Capability Framework — Guidance on establishing and operating an EA practice within an organization
