Architecture Roadmap
Official definition — learn word for word
“An abstracted plan for business or technology change, typically operating across multiple disciplines over multiple years. Normally used in the phrases Technology Roadmap, Architecture Roadmap, etc.”
The Architecture Roadmap lists individual work packages that will realize the Target Architecture and lays them out on a timeline to show progression from the Baseline to the Target Architecture (AC §4.2.7).

Memory aid
Roadmap = WHAT and WHEN at architecture level. Implementation and Migration Plan = the detailed project schedule.
Memory aid — not TOGAF wording.
In plain words
The multi-year route map: which packages of work happen when, which in-between states you pass through, and what value each step brings.
Plain-English summary — not TOGAF wording.
Worked example
DUK Roadmap 2026–2028: Year 1 — single student record (Transition 1); Year 2 — online payments and portal (Transition 2); Year 3 — retire legacy exam system (Target).
Illustrative example (Digital University Kerala) — not from the Standard.

02Architecture Roadmap vs Implementation and Migration Plan
| Aspect | Architecture Roadmap (AC §4.2.7) | Implementation and Migration Plan (AC §4.2.14) |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Lists work packages that realize the Target and lays them out on a timeline | A schedule of the projects that will realize the Target Architecture |
| Contains | Work package portfolio; Implementation Factor catalog; Consolidated Gaps matrix; Transition Architectures; recommendations | Implementation and Migration Strategy; project and portfolio breakdown; milestones; work breakdown structure |
| Transition Architectures | Identified as intermediate steps | Act as portfolio milestones (ADM §10.3.6) |

03How the roadmap is built
Phases B, C, D · Step 5Define Candidate Roadmap Components
Phase E · 9.3.11Create the Architecture Roadmap & Implementation and Migration Plan (draft)
Phase F · 10.3.5Confirm Architecture Roadmap and update the ADD
Phase F · 10.3.6Complete the Implementation and Migration Plan

04Where it appears in the ADM
Phases B, C, D · Step 5
Define Candidate Roadmap Components.
ADM §4.3.5, §6.3.5, §7.3.5, §8.3.5
Phase E · Step 9.3.11
Consolidate work packages and Transition Architectures into the Architecture Roadmap, Draft.
ADM §9.3.11
Phase F · Step 10.3.5
Confirm Architecture Roadmap and Update Architecture Definition Document.
ADM §10.3.5
05Exam traps
“The roadmap is produced only in Phase F” → Developed incrementally through Phases E and F, informed by B, C, D
“The roadmap and the Implementation and Migration Plan are the same” → The roadmap lays out work packages; the I&M Plan schedules the projects
“The roadmap shows only the final target” → It identifies Transition Architectures as intermediate steps
“The roadmap ignores value” → It highlights each work package's business value at each stage
