Phase E (Opportunities & Solutions) is where all four BDAT Gap Analyses converge. Phase E consolidates every gap into discrete Work Packages, defines Transition Architectures as intermediate milestones, and produces the first Draft Architecture Roadmap.
Phase E is the first phase AFTER the four architecture development phases (B, C, D). It consolidates all the work done in B, C, and D into an actionable plan.
- ▸📥 Receives all four Gap Analyses: Business (Phase B), Data & Application (Phase C), Technology (Phase D)
- ▸📦 Creates Work Packages — discrete, implementable chunks of work for each gap
- ▸🏗️ Defines Transition Architectures — intermediate architecture states between Baseline and Target
- ▸🗺️ Produces Draft Architecture Roadmap (sequence of work packages over time)
- ▸🔗 Identifies implementation dependencies between work packages
- ▸🔄 May involve looping back to earlier phases if gaps reveal new issues
See how CDIPD's four gap analyses consolidate into work packages, Transition Architectures, and a Draft Architecture Roadmap:
TA-1 (Q1–Q3): WP-1 + WP-2 + WP-6 → Foundation in place.
TA-2 (Q4–Q6): WP-3 + WP-4 + WP-5 → Full Target Architecture achieved.
Phase E produces the DRAFT roadmap. Phase F finalizes it into the Implementation & Migration Plan.
Phase E consolidates ALL FOUR Gap Analyses (B + C-Data + C-App + D) into work packages. Transition Architectures are intermediate states between Baseline and Target. The Architecture Roadmap is drafted here and finalized in Phase F. Phase E does NOT produce the Implementation Plan — that's Phase F.
These two concepts are frequently confused on the exam. Understanding the distinction is critical for scenario questions.

The Architecture Roadmap is Phase E's primary output and one of TOGAF's most-tested concepts. It maps the journey from Baseline to Target over time.
- ▸📋 Lists all Work Packages in priority/dependency order
- ▸⏱️ Shows which work packages form each Transition Architecture
- ▸🎯 Shows estimated timeline (not a precise project plan — that is Phase F)
- ▸📌 Phase E = DRAFT Architecture Roadmap
- ▸📌 Phase F = FINALIZED Implementation & Migration Plan (includes the roadmap)
- ▸⚠️ Critical exam rule: "who produces the Architecture Roadmap?" = Phase E (draft), Phase F (finalized)
