💡 The Big Idea

Phase F (Migration Planning) translates the Draft Architecture Roadmap from Phase E into a detailed, actionable Implementation and Migration Plan. This is where architecture hands off to project management — coordinating with the PMO, finance, and operational teams to finalize schedules, resources, and costs.

Phase F bridges architecture and implementation. It takes the what (work packages from Phase E) and determines the how, when, and at what cost.

  • ▸📋 Finalizes the Architecture Roadmap (from Phase E draft)
  • ▸📅 Creates the Implementation and Migration Plan (detailed project schedule)
  • ▸💰 Coordinates with finance for cost estimation and budget approval
  • ▸👥 Coordinates with PMO for project governance and resource allocation
  • ▸⚖️ Prioritizes work packages using cost/benefit/risk analysis
  • ▸🔗 Identifies and resolves inter-project dependencies
  • ▸📊 Assesses resource availability (teams, skills, infrastructure)

See how CDIPD's 6 work packages from Phase E are sequenced into an Implementation and Migration Plan with priorities, timelines, and risk assessments:

Phase E — What to do
  • ▸ Work packages identified
  • ▸ Transition Architectures defined
  • ▸ DRAFT Architecture Roadmap
Phase F — How & When
  • ▸ Projects sequenced & scheduled
  • ▸ Resources & costs confirmed
  • ▸ Implementation & Migration Plan

Phase F Key Outputs
Implementation & Migration Plan
The PRIMARY Phase F output — combines Architecture Roadmap with project timeline, resource plan, and migration sequence
Architecture Roadmap (Finalized)
Phase E produced the DRAFT — Phase F finalizes it with actual project schedules and confirmed resources

⚡ Phase F Exam Rule

Phase F produces the Implementation and Migration Plan — NOT the Architecture Roadmap (that's Phase E's draft). Phase F is about how and when to execute the work packages. Phase E asks "what?" — Phase F answers "when, by whom, and how much?" The Implementation Plan coordinates with the organization's PMO and finance functions.

These two documents are closely related but distinct — a frequent source of exam confusion.

  • ▸🗺️ Architecture Roadmap (Phase E draft): high-level sequence of work packages and Transition Architectures — ARCHITECTURE perspective
  • ▸📅 Implementation and Migration Plan (Phase F): detailed project schedules, resources, costs, governance — PROJECT MANAGEMENT perspective
  • ▸📌 The Roadmap answers "what in what order?"; the Plan answers "when, by whom, how much?"
  • ▸🔑 The Architecture Roadmap is CONTAINED IN the Implementation and Migration Plan (Phase F finalizes and embeds it)
  • ▸⚠️ Exam trap: "Who produces the Implementation and Migration Plan?" = Phase F (not Phase E)

Phase F must prioritize work packages and projects based on multiple factors — this prioritization is a key Phase F activity tested in scenarios.

  • ▸💼 Business Value: which projects deliver the most benefit to organizational goals?
  • ▸🔗 Dependencies: foundational work (infrastructure, platform) must precede dependent applications
  • ▸⚠️ Risk: high-risk projects (e.g., data migration) scheduled with appropriate buffer and fallback plans
  • ▸💰 Cost and Benefit: quick wins (low cost, high benefit) prioritized where dependency-free
  • ▸👥 Resource Availability: teams and skills available at each point in time
  • ▸🏛️ Stakeholder Priority: organizational stakeholders may accelerate certain projects
