Enterprise Continuum

5-minute sheet
Official definition — learn word for word
“A categorization mechanism for classifying architecture and Solution Building Blocks (SBBs) as they evolve from generic to specific applicability (or vice versa).”
It comprises two complementary concepts: the Architecture Continuum and the Solutions Continuum (CC §3.10).

In plain words

A way of labelling every asset by how generic or how specific it is, so you can find and reuse the right one.
Plain-English summary — not TOGAF wording.

Worked example

The TOGAF TRM is Foundation; a generic single-sign-on pattern is Common Systems; a higher-education student-lifecycle model is Industry; DUK's own student-services architecture is Organization-Specific.

ARCHITECTURE CONT.
Structures ABBs; guides Solutions Continuum
SOLUTIONS CONT.
Re-usable SBBs that implement the architecture

02Enterprise vs Architecture vs Solutions Continuum (AC §6.3)

ContinuumWhat it classifies / offers
Enterprise ContinuumThe outermost continuum: classifies assets related to the context of the overall EA (policies, standards, strategic initiatives, organizational structures, enterprise-level capabilities). Not directly used during ADM architecture development.
Architecture ContinuumA consistent way to define and understand generic rules, representations and relationships; a structuring of ABBs, from Foundation → Common Systems → Industry → Organization-Specific
Solutions ContinuumA consistent way to describe and understand the implementation of the assets in the Architecture Continuum; defines re-usable SBBs

03How the ADM uses the Continuum (AC §6.5)

Adopt & adapt generic assetsleft → right: generic to organization-specific
develop and deploy
Enterprise-specific architecture + solutionsconform to that architecture
if credible and effective
Generalize for re-useright → left in the classification

04Where it appears in the ADM

Throughout the ADM
At relevant places there are pointers to useful architecture assets at the relevant level of generality in the continuum.
AC §6.5
Phase G · Step 11.3.3
Update Enterprise Continuum directory and repository for solutions.
ADM §11.3.3

05Exam traps

“The Enterprise Continuum stores architecture assets” → It is a categorization mechanism; the Architecture Repository stores
“It has only two parts” → Three continua: the outermost Enterprise Continuum plus the Architecture and Solutions Continua
“Adaptation for use runs specific → generic” → Adaptation for use: generic → specific; generalization for re-use: specific → generic
“The Architecture Continuum structures SBBs” → It structures ABBs; the Solutions Continuum covers SBBs
“The TOGAF TRM sits at the Organization-Specific end” → Foundation Architectures, such as the TRM, sit at the generic end

Q1Define the Enterprise Continuum.
A categorization mechanism for classifying architecture and SBBs as they evolve from generic to specific applicability (or vice versa).
Q2Name its two complementary concepts.
Architecture Continuum and Solutions Continuum.
Q3Name the four levels, generic → specific.
Foundation, Common Systems, Industry, Organization-Specific.
Q4What does the arrow “Adaptation for use” point towards?
Specific.
Q5Which continuum structures ABBs?
Architecture Continuum.
Q6Which is the outermost continuum?
The Enterprise Continuum.
Q7Is the Enterprise Continuum used directly during ADM architecture development?
Its classes of assets may influence architectures but are not directly used.
